Mother Nature threw a curveball into the opening slate of games at the Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational on Thursday.

As a result of inclement highway conditions, several out-of-town schools were unable to make the trek to Brandon, which resulted in a bevy of changes to the schedule.

The host Neelin Spartans were able to take to the court though as they kicked off their slate with a 93-88 triumph over the Weyburn (Sask.) Eagles.

In other Tier 1 contests, the Maples Marauders defeated the Oak Park Raiders 95-44, the Vincent Massey Vikings knocked off the River East Kodiaks in an 87-73 affair, the Dakota Lancers outscored Regina’s Winston Knoll Wolverines in a 103-70 affair and the Glenlawn Lions beat the Aden Bowman Bears of Saskatoon by a score of 73-60.

Meanwhile, in Tier 2 action, the Neelin junior varsity team dropped a 55-24 affair to the Sanford Sabres, while the Crocus JV Plainsmen JV squad suffered an 88-37 setback to the Calvin Christian Eagles.

Vincent Massey’s JV program lost to the Selkirk Royals in an 84-52 contest and the Yorkton Raiders earned a 71-60 win over the Mennonite Brethren Hawks.

Barring any more schedule changes, tournament play resumes at 9 a.m. today at Neelin, Vincent Massey, Crocus Plains and the Healthy Living Centre.

The tournament wraps up on Saturday with the championship games taking place at Neelin. The Tier 2 final starts at 5:10 p.m. with the Tier 1 title contest tipping off at 7 p.m.
