When the puck wasn't in play, Kastelic found himself sneaking peeks into the crowd, even finding his mom in the corner.

Kastelic's first NHL game in his hometown was going to be memorable no matter what. He added the perfect topper to a perfect day by scoring the winning goal.

Kastelic scored in the third period to give Ottawa a two-goal lead and the Senators held on to beat his hometown Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Thursday night.

Spieth, Kirk share early lead on gorgeous day at Sony Open

HONOLULU (AP) — Jordan Spieth played about the way he expected Thursday, another sign of growing confidence in his game, as he opened with a 6-under 64 for an early share of the lead with Chris Kirk at the Sony Open.

Harris English had a 65 on a gorgeous day at Waialae Country Club, with a blazing sun and just enough wind to make players think every now and then.

Spieth ended nearly four years without a victory when he won the Texas Open in 2021, and then added another win at Hilton Head last year. Missing on this day was the slow swing rehearsal to ingrain the changes he made to his swing.

His key word is freedom, and it sure looked that way at Waialae. He had three birdies in a a four-hole stretch around the turn, and outside of his lone bogey on 13th hole, his only disappointment was having to settle for par on his final hole at the par-5 ninth.

Flames’ Duehr 1st player from South Dakota to score in NHL

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Walker Duehr made history with his first career NHL goal.

Duehr’s first goal for Calgary on Thursday night broke a scoreless tie in the second period, and the 23-year-old winger who was born in Sioux Falls became the first South Dakota-born player to score in the NHL.

“This shows that anybody who puts their head down and goes to work can achieve pretty great things,” Duehr said.

Dillon Dube scored twice in the third period and Dan Vladar made 25 saves, helping the Flames to a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Kyle Connor breaks 3rd-period tie, Jets beat Sabres 4-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Kyle Connor broke a tie on a third-period breakaway in the Winnipeg Jets’ 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Nikolaj Ehlers intercepted Rasmus Dahlin’s pass and sent the puck to Connor, who sprinted up the ice and beat goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 7:19 to help give the Jets their sixth victory in seven games.

“(Luukkonen) was out pretty far,” Connor said. “I just gave him kind of a little fake shot and he froze pretty good. Backhand, forehand, lost an edge, but I had him, so it worked out.”

Dylan Samberg, Josh Morrissey, and Karson Kuhlman also scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves.

Red Wings beat Maple Leafs for 1st time in nearly 4 years

DETROIT (AP) — Lucas Raymond had a goal and two assists as the Detroit Red Wings beat Toronto 4-1 on Thursday night for their first victory over the Maple Leafs in nearly four years.

Robby Fabbri, Ben Chiarot and Moritz Seider also scored for Detroit and Ville Husso stopped 31 shots. Rasmus Sandin scored for the Maple Leafs, who had won three in a row.

Detroit’s previous win against the Maple Leafs was a 3-2 overtime victory on Feb. 1, 2019. Toronto had had won nine in a row in regulation over the Red Wings, outscoring them 48-21.

The Maple Leafs are 18-2-2 vs. Detroit since the start of the 2016-17 season.

Stamkos scores 499th goal, Lightning beat Canucks 5-4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steven Stamkos scored his 499th goal on a 5-on-3 power play in the third period to help the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-4 on Thursday night.

On the verge of becoming the 47th NHL player to reach 500 goals, Stamkos beat Collin Delia from the left circle to make it 5-2 at 5:30. Delia made four strong saves on the Lightning captain, including a pair during the ensuing one-man advantage.

“I'm trying,” Stamkos said. “Shoot the puck and things are going to happen. Had some good looks tonight.”

Stamkos has two goals in his last 12 games.,

Pascal Siakam leads Raptors past Hornets 124-114 for Toronto’s third straight win

TORONTO - Scottie Barnes knows that his Toronto Raptors are finally finding their rhythm. Now they just have to stay motivated.

Barnes had 21 points, a team-high nine assists and seven rebounds as Toronto beat the Charlotte Hornets 124-114 on Thursday. It was the Raptors' third straight win, their longest such streak of the season.

"“We’ve just got to keep going. Don’t settle for less. Take it one game at a time right now," said Barnes. "Stay hungry. That’s what the team mindset is right now, stay hungry.

"Keep getting wins right now. Just stay hungry, for real.”

Canadiens top Predators 4-3 on night of honouring former defenceman P.K Subban

MONTREAL - Fuelled by a pre-game ceremony honouring former defenceman P.K. Subban, the Montreal Canadiens stepped up their game right from the start.

In a 4-0 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Monday, the Canadiens were outshot 19-6 in what head coach Martin St. Louis called an “unacceptable” first period. On Thursday, Montreal turned the tables outshooting Nashville 19-8 in the opening frame of a 4-3 win over the Predators.

“We’re working on correcting this and tonight was a good example,” St. Louis said. "If you look at Nashville’s first goal, we’re still playing a good first period and we kept fighting.

"I’m happy the guys got rewarded but it’s not just the win, it’s how we did it. I’m more happy for our game than our result.”
