TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Mark Kastelic spent the build-up to the game with family and friends. He signed a hockey stick for a kid during pregame warmups, something he rarely does.

When the puck wasn't in play, Kastelic found himself sneaking peeks into the crowd, even finding his mom in the corner.

Kastelic's first NHL game in his hometown was going to be memorable no matter what. He added the perfect topper to a perfect day by scoring the winning goal.

Kastelic scored in the third period to give Ottawa a two-goal lead and the Senators held on to beat his hometown Arizona Coyotes 5-3 on Thursday night.

“This shows that anybody who puts their head down and goes to work can achieve pretty great things,” Duehr said.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Kyle Connor broke a tie on a third-period breakaway in the Winnipeg Jets’ 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Nikolaj Ehlers intercepted Rasmus Dahlin’s pass and sent the puck to Connor, who sprinted up the ice and beat goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 7:19 to help give the Jets their sixth victory in seven games.

“(Luukkonen) was out pretty far,” Connor said. “I just gave him kind of a little fake shot and he froze pretty good. Backhand, forehand, lost an edge, but I had him, so it worked out.”

Dylan Samberg, Josh Morrissey, and Karson Kuhlman also scored for Winnipeg. Connor Hellebuyck made 39 saves.

Tristan D'Amours, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

MONTREAL - Fuelled by a pre-game ceremony honouring former defenceman P.K. Subban, the Montreal Canadiens stepped up their game right from the start.

In a 4-0 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Monday, the Canadiens were outshot 19-6 in what head coach Martin St. Louis called an “unacceptable” first period. On Thursday, Montreal turned the tables outshooting Nashville 19-8 in the opening frame of a 4-3 win over the Predators.

“We’re working on correcting this and tonight was a good example,” St. Louis said. "If you look at Nashville’s first goal, we’re still playing a good first period and we kept fighting.

"I’m happy the guys got rewarded but it’s not just the win, it’s how we did it. I’m more happy for our game than our result.”

McDonagh looks back at Leafs-Lightning series, talks new challenge with Predators

Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

TORONTO - Ryan McDonagh was sitting in the same locker room where, eight months earlier, he celebrated another playoff series triumph — one that resigned the tortured team down the hall to another soul-searching spring.

The veteran defenceman and his Tampa Bay Lightning came back from a 3-2 deficit in that first-round matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs in dramatic fashion last May, winning Game 6 in overtime at home before a hard-fought Game 7 victory at Scotiabank Arena.

The narrative coming from the other side was Toronto had been agonizingly close — that the core led by Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander deserved a chance to run it back despite a string of post-season flops.

The defeat felt different inside and outside the organization, even if the result was the same for a storied Original Six franchise that's failed to make the second round since 2004.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Klim Kostin scored two goals, and Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist apiece in the Edmonton Oilers' 6-2 victory over the last-place Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.

Leon Draisaitl also scored and Jack Campbell made 21 saves for the Oilers, who snapped a two-game skid on the second stop of a four-game West Coast road trip. Edmonton recorded 53 shots on goal while scoring at least six goals for the fifth time over the past five weeks and avenging a 4-3 loss to the lowly Ducks last month.

Dylan Holloway got the opening goal just 3:24 into Edmonton's four-goal first period, which was highlighted by McDavid's exceptional backhand goal after a turnover by Cam Fowler to make it 3-1.

“It's important to have a good start, especially against a young group,” McDavid said. “To get on top of them early is important, and make sure that they know it's going to be a hard night.”
