Cheers filled the Healthy Living Centre as Anthony Tsegakele swatted Ian Gasana’s shot 15 feet out of bounds. They doubled when Jahmaal Gardner returned the favour, spiking the basketball out of Tsegakele’s hands as he rose for a jump shot.

Pascal Siakam leads Raptors past Hornets 124-114 for Toronto’s third straight win

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023

TORONTO - Scottie Barnes knows that his Toronto Raptors are finally finding their rhythm. Now they just have to stay motivated.

Barnes had 21 points, a team-high nine assists and seven rebounds as Toronto beat the Charlotte Hornets 124-114 on Thursday. It was the Raptors' third straight win, their longest such streak of the season.

"“We’ve just got to keep going. Don’t settle for less. Take it one game at a time right now," said Barnes. "Stay hungry. That’s what the team mindset is right now, stay hungry.

"Keep getting wins right now. Just stay hungry, for real.”

TORONTO - The Toronto Raptors finally rediscovered their three-point shooting — and it led to a much-needed victory on Tuesday.

Entering the night as the lowly 29th-ranked team in the league in three-point shooting, the Raptors hit a season high 20 shots from behind the arc en route to a 132-120 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, their second consecutive win.

O.G. Anunoby matched a career-high of six three-pointers on a 22-point night, while Pascal Siakam had 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

"We came out obviously just taking the open (shots) and I think we created a lot in transition as well, just kick-out shots that were good ones, so it was pretty good," coach Nick Nurse said. "I'm very happy with making threes and assists and putting points on the scoreboard. It was good to see."

Porter was limited to eight games in his first season in Toronto and averaged 5.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 18.3 minutes.

Porter signed with the Raptors as a free agent after helping the Golden State Warriors win the NBA championship last season.

He missed the first seven games of the season with a left hamstring strain sustained in training camp, followed by personal reasons.

Siakam scores 27 and Raptors beat Blazers 117-105 for first win in four games

TORONTO - In a key span of 18 seconds midway through the fourth quarter on Sunday, Fred VanVleet calmly hit two catch-and-shoot three-pointers.

While the all-star guard has fallen out of favour with some Raptors fans amid his recent shooting struggles, particularly with the March 3 trade deadline looming, the veteran's big shots restored a nine-point lead and stuffed a Trail Blazers run, en route to Toronto's 117-105 win over Portland.

"Competing man, just trying to get a win and, again, laying it all out there on the line," VanVleet said of his six quick points. "That was a big swing there. So, just competing in the moment and trying to find a way to get it done, and we were able to do that tonight."

Pascal Siakam scored 27 points in the Raptors' first victory in four games. Scottie Barnes finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Gary Trent Jr. had 19 points, and VanVleet and O.G. Anunoby chipped in with 14 apiece for the Raptors (17-23), who've won just six of their last 20 games.

Billups: Canadian guard Shaedon Sharpe developing well with Portland Trail Blazers

Lori Ewing, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023

TORONTO - While an air of mystery surrounded Canadian Shaedon Sharpe around the 2022 NBA draft, the Portland Trail Blazers guard is certainly a secret no longer.

Sharpe played in Canada as a pro for the first time on Sunday as the Toronto Raptors hosted Portland, and Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups had kind words for his 19-year-old rookie from London, Ont.

"Shae is uber-talented, obviously. It's been a delight just coaching him. He listens. Picks up things pretty quickly. He's been playing really well," Billups said before tipoff. "And obviously for a young guy like that who its always going to be up and down, especially because he hasn't played actual basketball in a while … games, if you will."

Sharpe was the proverbial dark horse of the June draft, taken No. 7 overall despite the complete absence of any recent game footage of the six-foot-six player, who went to the University of Kentucky for a semester but then opted to put his name in the draft before playing a game for the Wildcats.

Difficulty of limiting VanVleet’s minutes continues to show for Nurse, Raptors

Abdulhamid Ibrahim, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Friday, Jan. 6, 2023

TORONTO - The difficulty of decreasing Fred VanVleet's minutes continues to be on display as the season wears on.

After tying for the league lead in minutes (37.9) per night last season — alongside Toronto Raptors teammate Pascal Siakam — VanVleet vowed he'd be more conscientious of his minutes and smarter with his body back in training camp.

However, as Toronto head coach Nick Nurse put it in September, it's easier said than done.

Toronto's all-star guard played his second consecutive and ninth 40-plus minute game of the season in Friday night's 112-108 loss to the New York Knicks.

TORONTO - The frustration continues for the Toronto Raptors.

Julius Randle scored 19 of his 32 points in the first quarter and hauled down 11 rebounds to lead the New York Knicks 112-108 over the Raptors on Friday, beating Toronto for the first time in 12 tries at Scotiabank Arena.

The Raptors' was their third straight and 11th of their last 14 games.

Fred VanVleet, who led Toronto with 28 points, said the team isn't playing with a consistent sense of urgency but can't put his finger on why.

Raptors overcome horrible start en route to 104-101 OT loss to Bucks

Lori Ewing, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023

TORONTO - In what coach Nick Nurse called one of the craziest games of his career, the Toronto Raptors almost pulled off the unlikeliest of victories.

They scored 12 points in the first quarter. And 18 in the final 74 seconds of regulation. But their furious finish fell just short in a 104-101 overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

"I don't think I've seen one that weird," Nurse said. "I don’t really know what to say as far as the offence goes and not being able to put the ball in … I do know what to say about the defence: the defence kept on plugging and plugging and plugging all the way."

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple double — 30 points, a season-high 21 rebounds and 10 assists — plus a career-high 12 turnovers, while Brook Lopez hauled down 19 boards for the Bucks (25-13).
