WASAGAMING — It’d have been easier to stop a Mack truck on a highway than Mack Sanderson on a Clear Lake Golf Course fairway on Friday.

The Vancouver Islander, who spends his summers in Virden, rattled off five straight birdies to defeat Jeri-Ann Lafleche 4 and 2 in the Tamarack golf tournament junior semifinals.

Sanderson is back in the final after losing to Jordon McDonald in 2021. This time, he gets Neepawa’s Hayden Delaloye, who ousted Brandon’s Jaxon Jacobson 3 and 2.

Sanderson chipped in on the third hole — they started on the 10th — to start his birdie string Lafleche had no answer for.

“It definitely got things rolling for me,” Sanderson said. “I was feeling really confident and to birdie the last five in a row, I was just hitting good shots.

“… It was a battle on the front nine, 1 down after nine but this is probably my favourite nine holes in all of golf right here. I love it.”

It’s the second time Sanderson’s doubled his first hole and went on a tear afterwards. He birdied the 11th and 12th to halve both, then two-putted for another circle on 16 before Lafleche stuck one and birdied the 17th and took the 18th to lead at the turn.

Sanderson birdied eight of the 16 holes he played and tied his record with five straight.

Meanwhile, Delaloye led early and never looked back. He wasn’t about to find trouble with his five-iron off most tees. He birdied the 16th and fifth, then closed it out when Jacobson missed into the right trees on the par-4 seventh.

“I played good. He put up some really good shots like 12 he stuck it to two feet. He played really good, it was a great match, I enjoyed it,” Delaloye said.

“It’s fun. It pushes you to play your best and it’s enjoyable.”

Delaloye and Sanderson met back in Grade 2 when Sanderson lived in Neepawa and they played hockey together.

They both feel they can play to their strengths and take advantage of the other’s weaknesses in today’s title match.

“Just playing my game. He’s a little shaky on the greens so we’ll see how it goes,” Sanderson said with a grin.

“Tee shots, especially the driver, he’s a little inconsistent there,” Delaloye replied.

“… It’s going to be a fun match, doesn’t matter who wins, going to be a fun day.”
