It’s now nearly a mathematical impossibility that Manitoba sees the weekend at the Tim Hortons Brier.

Mike McEwen, Reid Carruthers, Derek Samagalski and Colin Hodgson couldn’t generate enough points to come back from a 3-1 deficit at the break and lost 6-3 to Team Canada’s Brad Gushue (7-1) at Westoba Place on Thursday afternoon.

“I actually thought we played pretty well,” McEwen said. “You don’t get much margin for error when you’re playing a well-oiled team like that.

“I thought we were dealing with a little difficult set of rocks. That’s one of the most un-matches sets on the ice and we tried our best.”

Manitoba (4-4) needs a lot of help to make it through, most importantly a win over Kevin Koe and Alberta as championship pool play continues tonight at 7 o’clock.

“Things aren’t in our control anymore. We’ll just try to hopefully win out and see what happens,” McEwen said.

Northern Ontario’s Brad Jacobs improved to 8-0 with an 11-5 win over B.C.’s Jim Cotter. Again, Jacobs only had to play eight ends.

“We got a lot of misses out of B.C. That wasn’t their best performance. We took advantage of every opportunity they gave us,” Jacobs said. “We’re thrilled to be in the championship pool and play against some familiar faces, and really get into the stressful part of the week.”

Alberta’s Kevin Koe (8-0) stayed perfect with a fantastic game-winning shot for three to beat Wild Card’s Brendan Bottcher 7-6. Bottcher dropped to 6-2.

Ontario’s Scott McDonald (5-3). stayed alive with a 7-4 triumph over Saskatchewan’s Kirk Muyres (4-4).
