Manitoba RCMP arrested a 39-year-old Brandon man on Dec. 22, 2021 and charged him with multiple counts of sexual assault.
Troy Innes is being charged with two counts of sexual assault, as well as one count of luring and one count of sexual exploitation of a young person by a person in a position of trust or authority.
According to a Tuesday morning news release, the RCMP received a report of Innes’ alleged sexual offences back in May, with the incidents in question reportedly taking place between January and December 2010.
When the alleged incidents took place, Innes was employed as a teacher at the Turtle Mountain School Division, with the survivor being a teenage female student.
At the time of his arrest on Dec. 22, Innes was employed as a teacher in the Brandon School Division.
As of early Tuesday afternoon, Innes is still listed as a teacher on Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School’s official website.
However, a representative of the BSD informed the Sun via email that Innes has been placed on an administrative leave pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
“As the matter is now before the courts and is a personnel matter, the Division will not comment any further,” the representative wrote.
Previous reporting from the Sun also indicates that Innes once served as the head coach of the Crocus Plainsmen boys baseball team for at least several years.
A May 2012 article from the Sun also revealed that Innes worked as a teacher at Boissevain School, where he also coached the boys baseball team.
Following his Dec. 22 arrest, Innes was eventually released from custody on a number of conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in Killarney on March 8.
TMSD interim superintendent Grant Wiesner told CTV News in an email that “the Division is treating the allegations as extremely serious and taking all necessary precautions to ensure that the matter is properly investigated.”
Tuesday’s news release from the RCMP also wanted to remind the public that there is no time limit on reporting sexual assault.
If a survivor is not comfortable contacting the police directly, they also have the option of reporting a sexual assault to a third party group like Klinic Community Health.
