TODAY

• 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. — Brandon book launch of Michael Decter’s novel, “Shadow Life.” Held at the Gathering Space at the John E. Robbins Library, Brandon University (270 18th St., Brandon).

FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Dance and socialize at Central Community Centre (529 Fourth St., Brandon) on Friday afternoons. Music by Prairie Fire, admission is $7.50 and includes lunch. For more information, call 204-729-9301.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Winter Lights at the Museum – For Total Freedom. A new event in support of the Total Freedom Addiction Centre will be held at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum (south of Austin, just south of the intersection of Provincial Trunk Highway 34 and Road 63 North). See the holiday lights from the comfort of your own vehicle. Make a donation for entry. All proceeds will go to new bunk beds for the clients of Total Freedom Addiction Centre.

SATURDAY

• 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. — Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo and his son Sam Polley play the Shamrock Centre in Killarney (725 Broadway Ave.) Tickets are $30 per person and available through eventbrite.ca or by emailing the Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council at ktmartscouncil@ gmail.com.

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Club meets on Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place each Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

TUESDAY

• Brandon University Bobcats basketball — On Friday, both men’s and women’s teams play their provincial rivals, the University of Manitoba Bisons, on alumni night at the Healthy Living Centre (2010 Louise Ave., Brandon). Join BU alumni in the VIP area for free pizza, refreshments and door prizes. Women’s game starts at 6 p.m.; men’s, 8 p.m. On Saturday, the teams face each other again, with the women’s game at 5 p.m. and the men’s at 7 p.m.

AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — You and What Army will play current and classic rock for two nights, Friday and Saturday. Cover is $5 and the music starts at 10 p.m. This is an 18-plus event and photo identification is required.

• Lady of the Lake Shop, Café and Pub (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Jakeleg Blues Band plays jazz-flavoured blues on Friday from 9 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $5 and available through eventbrite.ca. Once you’ve purchased your tickets, please make a reservation. Phone 204-726-8785.

AT THE MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• The Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N, 118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. • The Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys and dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children $12, and children under five are free. Phone: 204-727-1722.

• The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. Jan. 19 to March 18 — The “Here and There” exhibit presents the work of two self-taught artists whose work features imaginary landscapes and idealized memories. Jan. 26 to April 1 — The Emily Jan: Kali Yuga. This series is a meditation on themes of disappearance, collapse, and hope amid ruins.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023. Jan. 7-28 — “A Family Affair” is an exhibition that highlights the work of partners Betty and Clarence Sawatzky, and Clarence’s sister Nancy Penner. Works include carvings, alcohol inks, charcoal, graphite, paint, fibre and encaustic pieces.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Brandon) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. — The museum’s first edition of its Show and Tell speaker series will be “The Ukrainian Experience in Brandon, Manitoba” with Stella Fedeniuk. Fedeniuk is a second-generation Canadian of Ukrainian descent.

AT THE EVANS THEATRE

• Jan. 13-15, all shows at 7:30 p.m. — “Nowhere Special”: John, a 35-year-old window cleaner, has dedicated his life to bringing up his four-year-old son, Michael, after the child’s mother left them soon after giving birth. When John is given only a few months left to live, he attempts to find a new, perfect family for Michael, determined to shield him from the terrible reality of the situation. Tickets: $6.

• Jan. 26-29 — Dakota Nation Winterfest at the Keystone Centre (1175 18th St., Brandon, Dakota Territory). Includes hockey, volleyball, wacipi, moccasin game, talent show, trade show, 3 vs. 3 basketball, square dancing, pool tournament and more. Admission is $20 daily (six years and under, and 60 years and over, free).

• Jan. 29 — The Cheesecake Burlesque Revue at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (205 20th St., Brandon). A message of body positivity delivered with comedy, sass and glitter. Tickets $45 and available at the auditorium box office or by calling 204-728-9510, or order online at wmca.ca.

• Feb. 4-5 — Mecca Productions presents Monty Python’s “Spamalot.” Final two shows after COVID restrictions interrupted the original run in 2020. Showtimes: 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4, and 2 p.m. on Feb. 5.
