Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will leave June 25 for an 11-day visit to Canada, Buckingham Palace announced today. The Queen will visit Canada again Aug. 2-10 to attend the Commonwealth prime ministers conference.

Terry Fox, the young cancer victim who inspired millions with his attempt to run across Canada in 1980, has made it into the latest edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as having raised the greatest amount of money in a charity walk or run.

The Westman Recycling Depot and Processing Centre was only officially opened this weekend, but over the last few months it has already become one of the most successful outlets in the province.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The infamous Norwalk virus may be just beginning its journey through Brandonites’ gastrointestinal systems, says Dr. Derry Decter. The Brandon physician says since Christmas, at least 100 people have come to his walk-in clinic with gastrointestinal illness, and he suspects a “good percentage” of them had Norwalk.

TEN YEARS AGO

Brandon Police Service Chief Keith Atkinson received a fond farewell Wednesday, as his colleagues and friends gathered to honour his 33 years in law enforcement. A special retirement ceremony was held for Atkinson in the Grey Owl dining room at Assiniboine Community College’s North Hill campus.

The windows at Brandon’s courthouse have received a $650,000 upgrade. A total of 55 windows, which dated back to the 1950s, were replaced with an energy-efficient model. There was also an effort to bring the building back to its original look.
