TWENTY YEARS AGO

Brandon dietitian Melanie Hart says Health Canada’s new mandatory nutrition labelling requirements will create a “more even playing field” for food manufacturers and consumers. Manufacturers of foods that are less healthy have often avoided labels, she says, something that will be difficult under the new rules. The rules, announced Jan. 1, require most food packages to carry information on 13 key ingredients in a consistent format.

Westman residents looking to buy property will get more out of 2003 than those counting on good investment returns, says Bruce Kahler, Westoba Credit Union’s vice-president of finance. “Generally things in Brandon will continue on as in 2002,” he says. Mortgage rates should stay between four and seven per cent, while investment returns could stay under six per cent.

TEN YEARS AGO

Organizers of the U.S.A. pavilion say they are “extremely disappointed” to be excluded from the upcoming Lieutenant Governor’s Winter Festival, despite a successful run at last year’s event. The American pavilion committee released a statement Thursday, expressing concern and confusion over the festival committee’s decision to decline their application.

Staff members and patients at the Russell Health Centre are still rattled by an incident that occurred on Tuesday when a patient became so violent that he had to be sedated by a stun gun. Along with commending staff members for acting quickly to prevent any further harm, Prairie Mountain Health CEO Penny Gilson said counselling and stress debriefing are being offered to those involved.
