Ten lawyers, including Crown attorney William James Burgess of Minnedosa, were named Queen’s Counsel today by the Manitoba government.
One of the oldest hardware names in Canada will be seen shortly on a sign in front of a long established Brandon firm. J.H. Ashdown Hardware Co. Ltd., a landmark name in Winnipeg business circles, has been reported to have purchased the business formerly known as Brandon Hardware Co. Ltd. at Rosser Avenue and Seventh Street.

Four volunteer workers were honoured at a reception held in their honour by staff and patients of the Mental Health Centre. Mrs. Vi Streuber, Miss Kae Longrigg, and Mr. and Mrs. John Mayhew were presented gifts to commemorate their distinguished service at the Mental Health Centre.
Baseball star Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on his way to earthquake-ravaged Nicaragua to help save lives.

One of the federal government’s most controversial laws concerning gun control will take effect tomorrow, along with other legislative changes regulating everything from overtime hours to cellphone use. Under the 1995 Firearms Act, all gun owners across the country were to have their firearms registered by Jan. 1, 2003, but last week Justice Minister Martin Cauchon said gun owners need only send a letter to Ottawa stating their intent to register.

The province’s financial books are in rough shape and the inquiry into the 2005 death of Phoenix Sinclair has been top of mind, but the state of NHL hockey is also weighing on Greg Selinger as 2012 draws to a close. In a year-end interview, the Manitoba premier said the world’s foremost professional hockey league will need to build some goodwill after a second lengthy work stoppage in less than a decade. So he’s beginning to beat the drum for a hockey extravaganza that would see the Winnipeg Jets suit up for a regular-season contest against the Minnesota Wild — at the 33,422-seat Investors Group Field.
It’s been a tale of two winters — polar opposites — for snowmobilers in Manitoba this year after last year was pretty much a write-off following unseasonable mild temperatures and no snow. Snoman Inc. president Alan Butler said there was an early buzz among sledding enthusiasts following a large snowfall in November, and that energy has carried forward, although the Foxwarren resident said he’s hoping to see another good dump of snow soon. Last year, warm temperature records were the only things falling across the province, highlighted by 7.3 C temperature reading in Brandon on Jan. 5, according to The Weather Network.
