SIXTY YEARS AGO
F.O. Meighen, QC, was elected to the presidency of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce. He succeeds immediate past-president L.D. Whitehead.
A Manitoba oil strike 40 miles southwest of Brandon has proved significant. Two wells have been drilled by Texaco near Hartney. One is yielding 45 barrels a day and the other looks promising. Two others will be drilled soon.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
CFB Shilo will receive $340,000 as part of a $13.3-million federal allocation for job-creation projects lasting until May.
Council has agreed to option the old YMCA property on Eighth Street to the YMCA for $27,000. The site must be used to develop it jointly with the Manitoba government for low rental senior citizens home; future expansion of the Y itself; or develop it as a parking lot.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Brandon lawyer Jim Thornborough is the first Progressive Conservative to announce he will attempt to be the next MP for Brandon-Souris.
Boissevain movie buffs will be left out in the cold in 1983 unless community support can be found to reopen the local theatre. The owners of the Victoria Theatre have closed its doors and listed the property for sale.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Rapid City was evacuated and a maintenance worker was sent to hospital with minor burns yesterday morning after a furnace exploded, showering classrooms with soot.
A local family had to crawl to safety after waking up and discovering their house in flames in the early morning. John and Marie Holleman and their daughter escaped unharmed from the blaze, which destroyed their home at 336 16th St.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Talk of another big increase in school taxes is making some community members nervous and frustrated. Brandon school taxes jumped 11.8 per cent last year, and there is a possibility of a similar jump again.
TEN YEARS AGO
A father who beat up a child and family services worker and threw him down a flight of stairs has avoided jail after making an effort to become a better man. The CFS worker was attacked as he asked the offender’s daughters if they were OK during a scheduled visit to the family home.
Developers are walking away from older buildings in the downtown HUB because the cost of bringing them up to code is too prohibitive, according to the city’s Rosser Ward councillor. Coun. Corey Roberts said establishing a building code equivalency program is “very, very crucial” for revitalizing downtown.
